GPS Buyers Guide

Screen Size

There's a pretty simple formula when buying a GPS receiver.  The larger the screen size the easier it will be to use, but the more expensive it will be, and it will also be less portable to carry around.  Most GPS receivers come with a screen size in the 3.5 inch to 4.7 inch range.  The larger the screen size, the thicker it tends to be, so this is also worth considering if you are want to take it with you rather than leaving it in the car.  Entry level GPS products will have the 3.5 inch screen so it is usually worth paying the extra money to move up to a 4.3 inch screen.

Text-to-Speech

Text-to-Speech is offered on mid range and up GPS receivers.  This should not be confused with the standard audible directions such as ‘turn left, 200 yards’.  Text-to-speech takes the actual road names and adds this to the general directions, so the above would be ‘turn left, 200 yards into Queens Road’.  This makes driving in an unfamiliar area even easier as you don’t need to look at the receiver for road names, and can look out for the relevant road signs to confirm you are going in the right direction.

The below video is targeted to the US market, but does present an overview of the major features of GSP receivers.
