Desktop Buyers Guide
Processors
There are two major brands for processors, AMD and Intel. Intel is the more well known, and has the larger marketshare, but because of the technical nature of the processors it does make it difficult to do a simple comparison.
One feature that you can compare is the amount of cores per chip. Most desktop CPU's have at least a duel core processor, but more advanced machines have either a 4 core, or 6 core processor. The processor performs the millions of calculations required to run various applications on your desktop, and therefore the more cores your processor has the faster the machine is going to be.
Processor Speed is denoted in gigahertz (GHz). Most desktops fall in the 2GHz to 3GHz range.
Hard Drive
Hard drives come down to two key factors, size and speed. In a desktop you really want a hard drive with at least 500GB of storage space. If you don't think you need anywhere near this level of storage space then it might be worth considering buying a laptop which also has the benefit of being portable.
In terms of speed most desktop hard drives run at 7200rpm. If you want high performance speed then you can get 10,000rpm drives, but of course these are considerably more expensive.
